Fix the basics before adding sensors
A maintenance supervisor I worked with once bought a portable Milwaukee fan to 'help' a walk-in cooler that was running warm. The fan moved air nicely. The evaporator coil was still frosting over. The actual problem was a failing defrost thermostat—a $35 part and about an hour of labor.

How to tell which scenario you're in
Use this as a decision guide, not a personality quiz.
- Choose Scenario A if a regulator, customer, or contract requires an audit trail, or if a temperature excursion would destroy high-value product or create a safety risk.
- Choose Scenario B if your sites are distributed, infrastructure is unreliable, or local support is the main risk. Even if no regulator demands logs, your own peace of mind does.
- Choose Scenario C if your products are low-risk, passive packaging is enough, and your main problem is equipment reliability. Fix the thermostat, replace the wrong fan with the right evaporator fan, add a simple data logger, and revisit this when volumes change.
In some operations, the right answer is actually a mix. We run Scenario A for pharma clients, Scenario B for regional distribution, and Scenario C for local orders. There's no rule that says you have to pick one for everything.
The last word: prevention is cheaper than correction
After six years of buying cold chain equipment, I've come to believe that the best investment isn't always the newest hardware. It's the checklist you use before the shipment leaves.
I built a 12-point cold chain checklist after my third temperature excursion. That checklist has saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework. It costs nothing. It forces a five-minute verification at the moment when it still matters.
